COALBROOKDALE

CAST BRONZE DISH

MERMEN/TRITONS

A super, large nineteenth century shallow cast bronze dish, as exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. This is a relatively common design which was made by Coalbrookdale over a period of 30 years 1840 – 1870. The earliest plates to be manufactured were made of cast iron, however the tricky detail of this design did not lend itself to the manufacture with cast iron using relatively crude techniques so they progressed to alloy coated in copper and ‘bronzed’ and a limited number in bronze.

The design is by a German architect and designer Karl Friedrich Schinkel who travelled to England to study the techniques of cast iron production before returning to Germany where he designed pieces for the famous Berlin foundry. The same motif used of the water gods and hippocampi (sea horses) with tridents on this plate is used on the famous Schloßbrucke (Palace Bridge) in Berlin. Arguably one of the grandest bridges in Berlin and a fantastic historical association with this design of plate.

Surrounding a sun-rayed roundel to the centre the tapered sides sports superbly cast pierced work depicting panels of mermen or tritons alternating with sea horses. The mermen hold cockleshells aloft. Beyond this the piece is decorated with a profusion of scrolls and foliate motifs. We believe the images portray the well defined detail and the excellence of the casting. The definition is also continued to the reverse.

It is in good condition with no apparent damage, search as we may we haven't found anything amiss. The piece possesses a good strong patina with the exception of the standing edge to the base which is to be expected.

Displays magnificently. This is a heavy piece weighing in at 1527g
